Laow going work
I also had “laid on my Pi-Lao” but it was not that good as a title. And the beginning is always important. Isn’t it Bernardo?
Regarding Laos, the beginning was not really pleasing. Ripped off at the border. Let’s change the rules. 1 extra dollar for the output stamp of Cambodia, and another one to enter Laos ... Crafty! (A 1$ compulsory stamp, no need to stamp on your feet).
Then I went to the 4000 islands (there must be less than 1000 in there but after Cambodia, excessive language not titillate me anymore). I stayed at Don Det, a small island in the middle of the Mekong, where everything is organized to allow the tourist to … well to do nothing really. And Laotian doesn’t hesitate to show the example. Indeed, during a Canoe trip (the only physical attraction during the 4 days there), I formed a team with the guide who had a nasty tendency to paddle out of the water. So I went behind to make him working harder and presto, after a short pause, he played the "I lost my paddle" trick. “Don’t worry sir, I will share mine, I'm not like that”. And the lazybones preferred to hail a boat to hang it for the last 500m rather than help me. It starts well!
Then, I went to Pakse where I met Adele and Kerstin, future members of the "Garbage team" (No Bernardo, not Garbage tits but Garbage team). Together, we decided to do the Boloven Plateau loop where we met Fabian and Ryan, the last two members of the aforesaid team (No Bernardo, not a foreplay team, aforesaid team … suspicious). Note that these 2 guys bought a motorbike and it gives me ideas for the future. Cheaper, more free... only advantages. We'll talk about that later. Together we rode through the villages, waterfalls, beautiful landscapes and well supported by the Lao New Year, we took advantage of every moment. Lao New Year is three days during which, adults, children, old men, women, armed with pistols, water buckets or just a pipe, spray everybody in a joyous and relaxed atmosphere. The code is “Pi Mai Lao” which approximately means Happy New Year. (Bernardo used to say Pi man Lao but anyway, nobody can hear him)
So we played along. So much that the last night, drunk as a newt, we got fired from a Karaoke place. Alright Bernardo, we put all the chances on our side. Between robbing the microphone to say bullshit, dancing in front of the TV, preventing others from singing, all that’s left to do was to vomit on the table to complete the odious performance. But it will remain a great memory (Thanks to laolao, local liquor, 0.5 dollars, gives you 1 liter of alcohol at 25 degree. Nothing better for such a price-quality value).
Then, pissed out of my head, back to Pakse, I took the great decision that will change this Lao trip: I bought a motorbike too. And then, still drunk, but driving a Honda Win 110 cm3, I headed to Thakhek, joining my 4 mates who left in the morning. 360 km, 5:30, 2 break of 10 minutes ... tha KEK ... (Bernardo plays World of Warcraft, yes). After 1 day of rest on this place, we decided to do the 4 days loop, which is just as great as the one before. Laos, I was surprised by the beauty of your landscapes! Certainly, the people are lovely but I expected that. But the landscapes, no, it was a good surprise. Then we finished the loop by visiting the cave of Kong lo, very nice. But the end of the loop was quite different. After being bitten by a bee, my left eye was so swollen that I couldn’t drive anymore. So I jumped on the rear of Fabien motorbike (And Bernardo adds:'' You only have eyes for him ...'' I feel like he will upset me). And I joked with him: “Touch the knee, tilt and touch the knee” and hup, accident after a tight curve. We finally touched the knee, but not only (not only, on knee … ahahah Bernardo). Indeed, all my left side was scraped (Bernardo: “I remember now when buying a motorbike was just a gleam in your eye” … should I kill him?).
And finally, to top it all off, to balance pain and obviously also for humour ... I allowed myself the luxury of giving a kick in a stone that obstructed the passage. (Why topping off? Because this is the last little pain ... why balance? Well because it is my right foot which was pure of any injuries so far ... Why humour? Because you should really be a cunt to do that, and it makes all my mates laughing when they see me limping 1 week after. Something else Bernardo?).
Then little by little, mile after mile, villages after villages ... well you got me, we reached the north of the country, most mountainous and therefore really cool to ride with motorcycle. Just be careful because the roads are not perfect (Yes, “keep an eye!” If you want, if you want ...).
Firstly Vang Vieng. The town is very touristy but it is a good opportunity to do a little partying. My legendary charm, my amazing dreadlocks, my deep blue eyes and probably my supernatural lopsided finally drag me into a dance contest with ... a group of Lady boys, until the end of the night (“Keep weather eye open”, … thank you Bernardo for the adv-eyes). Ryan picked me up in the hallway of the hotel in the middle of the night and, believe it or not, I was quite happy not to be in my bed, surrounded by a dozen pair of cojones (“I didn’t bat an eyelid!” I think it’s enough Bernardo, everybody understood).
Then, probably in order to preserve our physical integrity, the team went away for new adventures, to Luang Prabang. Here we lived the last moments of our friendship and our epic expedition put to music our adventures, watched images with nostalgia ... You offer gifts, you promise a lot of shit, you cry, in short, the usual blabla. But nobody was fooled and I saw in the eyes of Ryan that he will not miss Fabien, while Adele was quick to embrace Kerstin saying "Farewell" one hour before our departure. And in the eyes of Fabien ... well nothing, a sidereal emptiness, frightening bovine. Quite scary indeed, Bernardo remain silent as well (surprising, there were a lot of good jokes to do).
Then, with Adele and Fabien we went further north, Fabien finally left us, always with the visual impassivity that I got used to and after passing through the worst road of all time, after a collapsing of vertebra and many broken stuffs on the bike, we finally reached Luang Namtha. (Where is Luang Nibor ? … ??? …. 2 minutes … aaaah, ok. No, Bernardo, not Namtab… He spells backwards now, it’s gonna be impossible to understand him any longer. If only he was dumb). This place was really beautiful. I spent 7 days, trying to sell my bike which I wouldn’t give it away for anything in the world (Except 220 US dollars, sure). Then the deal finally done, I rested, I spent time with the locals, I watched movies...
Laos has been a big heart-stopper and after 1 month of fantastic experiences, wonderful adventures, it was with sadness that i went back to Bangkok for one night before flying to Manila. (Yes Bernardo, there is something to do with "Bank" and "Cock" but i think it's enough now)
See you soon for new stories !
